Why Laser Engraving Machines Can’t Carve Metal?

With the rapid development of photoelectric technology, laser engraving technology is more and more widely used, and customers have higher and higher requirements for engraving accuracy. Those who know the laser engraving machine know that the main factors affecting the laser engraving machine include: engraving speed, laser power, engraving accuracy and material. Among them, the most important is the material. When it comes to materials, many people have all kinds of questions, among which the most puzzling one is: laser engraving machine can be applied to wood products, glass, stone, paper, leather, alumina and other products. Why can’t you just engrave metal?

1.Dot matrix engraving, which is similar to high-definition dot matrix printing. As we all know, the laser head swings left and right, carving a line composed of a series of points each time, and then the laser head moves up and down at the same time to carve multiple lines, and finally form a full page image or text. Scanned graphics, text and vectorized graphics and texts can be engraved with dot matrix.

2.Vector cutting, which is different from dot matrix carving. Vector cutting is carried out on the outer contour of the picture and text. We usually use this mode for penetration cutting on wood, Yake grain, paper and other materials, and can also mark the surface of a variety of materials.

3.Engraving speed. Engraving speed refers to the moving speed of the laser head, usually expressed in IPS (inch / second). High speed brings high production efficiency. Speed is also used to control the depth of cutting. For a specific laser intensity, the slower the speed, the greater the depth of cutting or engraving. You can use the engraving machine panel to adjust the speed, or you can use the print driver of the computer to adjust the speed. In the range of 1% to 100%, the adjustment range is 1%. The advanced motion control system of Hummer machine can make you still get ultra-fine engraving quality when engraving at high speed.

4.Engraving strength. Engraving intensity refers to the intensity of the laser emitted on the surface of the material. For a specific engraving speed, the greater the strength, the greater the depth of cutting or engraving. You can use the engraving machine panel to adjust the strength, or you can use the computer’s print driver to adjust it. In the range of 1% to 100%, the adjustment range is 1%. The greater the strength, the greater the speed. The deeper the cut.

5.Spot size. The spot size of laser beam can be adjusted by lenses with different focal lengths. The lens with small spot is used for high-resolution engraving. The lens with large light spot is used for low resolution engraving, but it is the best choice for vector cutting. The standard configuration of the new device is a 2.0-inch lens. The spot size is in the middle, which is suitable for various occasions.

Laser engraving machines generally use CO2 lasers, and the power of the laser tubes used now belongs to the medium and small power range. The maximum is 300W. Originally, metals absorb less of this medium wavelength laser. Therefore, laser engraving machines are generally not used to carve metal.
